Ports of Call
Cruise from Southampton
- Funchal (Madeira): Botanical gardens, viewpoints, and an easy waterfront set the tone. Take the cable car to Monte and stroll the shaded paths, or sample fortified wine in a lodge. Levada walks give gentle miles with broad Atlantic views. The old town’s painted doors and small restaurants add a pleasing evening amble.
- Santa Cruz (Tenerife): Modern galleries meet palm-lined squares. Wander to Plaza de España before heading to La Laguna’s UNESCO old town or into Teide National Park for stark volcanic scenery. The Auditorio gives a quick shot of architecture and seaside air. If the sun is up, Las Teresitas beach is a straightforward taxi away.
- Arrecife (Lanzarote): Sea pools and whitewashed lanes circle Charco de San Ginés. Day trips to Timanfaya and Jameos del Agua show off Manrique’s eye and the island’s geology. Stay local for a slow loop of the marina and Castillo de San Gabriel. Light, wind and lava make simple photos look good.
- Agadir: A long crescent of sand backed by boulevards. Visit the hilltop kasbah for harbour views, then browse the souk for spices and ceramics. Beach cafés keep things unhurried. It’s a relaxed stop with coastal air and space to walk.
- Casablanca: Big-city Morocco with an ocean front. Tour Hassan II Mosque, then pause on the Corniche or dip into the Habous quarter for bakeries and arches. Art Deco traces the line of the centre if you like a city wander. It’s busy, but taxis and clear targets make time work for you.
- Tangier: Clifftop views and a medina that slopes towards the sea. The American Legation Museum and Kasbah Museum frame the story of the port; Cap Spartel and the Caves of Hercules are easy add-ons. Small cafés in the Petit Socco give a breather between lanes. Expect colour, steps and sea breezes.
- Lisbon: Tramlines, tiled façades and viewpoints over the Tagus. Belém’s monuments and a quick pastéis stop fit neatly with a miradouro or two in Alfama. The riverfront walk from Cais do Sodré clears the head. Even with crowds, it’s an easy city to like in a day.
