Ports of Call
Cruise from Southampton
- Alesund: Art nouveau facades set between sea and slopes. Climb the steps to Mount Aksla for a clean sweep of islands, then stroll Brosundet for boats and warehouses. The aquarium suits a rainy hour. Calm, pretty and well signed for visitors.
- Narvik: North-of-Arctic-Circle rail town with war history and big horizons. The War Museum gives context before the cable car swings you into the mountain air. On clear days, the fjord views run for miles. A compact port that still feels expansive.
- Sortland: The ‘blue city’ of Vesterålen with gentle, open scenery. Boat trips look for sea eagles and seasonal whales; ashore, café life is slow and friendly. A short bridge walk gives photogenic angles. Quiet Norway in a single stop.
- Tromsø (Overnight onboard): Arctic Cathedral, bridge walks and lively bars under long winter nights. Take the Fjellheisen cable car for dusk views and, with luck, the aurora after dark. Polaria and the Polar Museum add bite-sized culture between strolls. The overnight lets you chase the lights without the clock snapping at your heels.
- Harstad: Islands, churches and a sheltered harbour. Visit Trondenes Church and its museum, then follow waterside paths for a steady leg-stretch. Local bakeries are a snug refuge if the weather turns. Understated and very Norwegian.
- Bergen: Bryggen’s timber wharf and a fish market close to the pier. The Fløibanen funicular gives an easy summit for city and fjord views. Duck into the KODE museums if rain sets in—a tidy finale before open sea.
